What is radon?
A colorless, odorless radioactive gas that comes from uranium breaking down in rock and soil. It seeps into houses through the foundation, and long-term exposure raises the risk of lung cancer.
My neighbor tested low. Do I still need to test?
Yes. Two houses on the same street can test very differently. Soil, foundation type, and how the house is sealed all change the number.
What does pCi/L mean?
Picocuries per liter, the unit US labs use for radon in air. EPA recommends fixing at 4 pCi/L or higher and considering a fix between 2 and 4.
Does the EPA radon zone map tell me if my house is safe?
No. EPA says the zone map shouldn't be used to decide whether to test. Homes with high levels turn up in every zone.
Can a radon system be put in without a basement?
Yes. Slab-on-grade houses use the same sub-slab method, and crawlspaces usually get a sealed plastic sheet with suction under it.
I'm selling my house. Will radon come up?
It often does. Many buyers include a radon test in their inspection. If you already have a system, keep the post-mitigation test result handy.
Who checks that a radon contractor is qualified in Massachusetts?
The state doesn't. DPH recommends professionals certified by NRPP or NRSB and publishes a list you can check.
I'm on a private well. What else should I test?
